The Alameda City Council named November 1, 2011 as Jean Sweeney Day in Alameda and presented Jim Sweeney and Jean's sister, Betty, with a proclamation honoring Jean for her years of service to the City. The proclamation declared that any park created on the Beltline would be name "The Jean Sweeney Open Space Preserve" in honor of her hard work researching the Beltline history, for finding the contract allowing the City to buy Beltline property for less tha a million dollars, and for creating the voter initiative that allowed the citizens to vote to save 23 acres of Beltline as open space.

This video clip of that City Council meeting shows Mayor Gilmore reading the proclamation and presenting it to the family. At the time Jean was too ill to be at the presentation. Many citizens attended and took the opportunity to speak about Jean and how important she was to everyone as a friend and activist.
